*Building Risk Communications Skills*

WHO: Local government staff and community partners working to engage various audiences in planning for natural hazards.

WHAT:  A workshop, led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office for Coastal Management, to develop your own actionable risk communication strategy and identify next steps for how to interact with your specific audience.  Notably, this workshop focuses on improving risk communication skills for coastal hazards planning and preparedness, not crisis communication when a disaster is imminent.

Participants engage in a CBNERR-VA training.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Recognize differing values, and identify how and why people perceive and respond to risks the way they do.
  • Develop a risk communication strategy that incorporates social science and risk communication principles.
  • Apply social science and risk communication principles when responding to difficult questions.
  • Respond to difficult questions with more confidence.
  • Collaborate with facilitators and peers to overcome risk communication challenges.

WHERE: This workshop will take place in Davis Hall, located on the VIMS campus in Gloucester Point, Virginia.  

WHY: The goal of this workshop is for participants to have a better understanding of how people respond to risk and for them to develop new communication skills for engaging a variety of audiences around hazards.

Available continuing education credits:

HOW: Register HERE through September 10, 11:59PM and pay workshop fees ($20) HERE to secure a seat.  This is a size limited offering and will close once capacity is reached.
