Introducing the Global Fishtag Network

Following a “World Volunteer Fishtag Summit” it was decided to set up a “Global Fishtag Network” to promote collaboration and sharing of information by the world’s volunteer fish tagging programs.  In the future, this page will serve as a repository of information from the World Volunteer Fishtag Summit and contact information for programs involved in volunteer fish tagging programs.

World Volunteer Fishtag Summit

The inaugural World Fishtag Summit, was held virtually August 23 and 24, 2023. The Summit was hosted by InfoFish Australia, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, American Littoral Society and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and featured 18 programs from five countries (USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Ireland) that collectively tagged more than 5,000,000 fishes over 70 years. The two-day conference allowed cooperative tagging programs to collaborate on methods, share operating procedures, and discuss the future of volunteer tagging programs in the changing context of fisheries management. The recordings along with AI generated transcripts and summaries from the conference can be viewed here.  An outcome of the meeting is the formation of the Global Fishtag Network, a cooperative, global network of fish tagging programs.
